Lib Dem Finance spokesman David Rendel has today unveiled a series of proposals to amend West Berkshire Council's budget for 2008/9, which is due to be debated at a meeting of full council tonight.

The proposals are designed to bring in a lower council tax rise as well as introducing a number of changes to benefit the community.

"We have shown that it is possible to deliver a lower council tax rise at a time when money is a key concern for people", commented Councillor Rendel. "In addition to this we will be proposing to introduce schemes to encourage greener travel in the district, including a pilot scheme of a free young person's bus scheme on two routes; Lambourn to Newbury and Thatcham to Newbury.

"We will also be scrapping the pointless evening car parking charge in Newbury, giving a Council Tax discount to flood victims who have been restricted to living upstairs, paying for another warden in Thatcham and doubling the extra money for drainage clearance in line with our proposals last year."
