Liberal Democrats are backing plans to electrify the line between Reading and Newbury.

Cllr Keith Woodhams Shadow Executive Member for Highways & Transport said that the surprise move would bring a host of environmental benefits and faster travel times for rail users in West Berkshire.

I also share the concerns expressed by rail users in Hungerford and Kintbury, and we will keep the pressure on for the service on this important route to be protected and enhanced.

However Conservative Executive Member for Highways & Transport Cllr Betts has already thrown doubt on his support for this exciting new scheme by announcing that he is supporting the listing of a rail bridge in Purley which will make it difficult for electrification to proceed.

There are around 11 bridges over the rail line between Reading and Newbury!
